County-Wide Brochure!

Here is a SNEAK-PEEK of our new County Brochure! We have worked so hard on this brochure. I think it has turned out nicely, and I cannot wait until everyone gets to see it. Keep checking back I will post more "sneak-peeks". Enjoy!

Where are they now? Pt 2

Our next “Where are they now” …I enjoyed this story. I always watch KWWL, but not generally on the weekends. I am going to watch it now just to see Danielle Wagner.

I lived in Strawberry Point and attended Starmont from kindergarten through sixth grade. I remember playing softball, being on the swim team and sledding at the school hill. The summer between sixth and seventh grades my family moved to Oelwein to be closer to my mom's job at the hospital. Many people in town know my mom, Melinda (Seedorff) Wagner. She grew up in Strawberry Point and graduated from Starmont. Her dad founded SMI. My grandma, Darlene Brady, was also from Strawberry Point. My aunt, Lisa Seedorff, still lives in town.

Now, I'm an anchor/reporter at KWWL Television based in Waterloo. I started at the station in December of 2006. Before then, I was a reporter at KTVO in Ottumwa. I was only there for a little more than a year before getting a call from KWWL asking me to interview for an open reporter position. I started at KWWL as a general assignment reporter (covering the news of the day), and I was promoted to weekend morning anchor in October 2007.

I still anchor the news from 8 to 9 a.m. each Saturday and Sunday. I started our weekend pet segment, a monthly sweet tooth segment and monthly segments with a Hy-Vee dietitian. Besides weekends, I also report during the week doing feature stories for my "Someone You Should Know" segment. Those stories air each Sunday and Monday during the KWWL news at 10 p.m.

I'm very passionate about animals. I live in Waterloo with my dog, Cubbie. When I'm not working, I enjoy taking Cubs on walks and reading and watching sports (mostly football). I've organized several fundraisers for the Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo. For several years I've organized a "Dog Day" at the ballpark with the Waterloo Bucks.

I graduated from Oelwein High School in 2001 and from the University of Iowa in 2005 with a degree in journalism and history. I'm an Iowa girl through and through. I've never lived in another state, and I don't have plans to leave.

My parents (Dave and Melinda Wagner) live in Oelwein. Mom still works at the hospital, and Dad is retired. People might also remember my younger brothers. Derek is 26 and works for Alliant Energy in Cedar Rapids. Devin is 22 and graduates from the University of Iowa in May 2012. He already has a job as an engineer at a company in Cedar Rapids.

It is Spring Time

It is spring time! Now is the time to start cleaning out your closets, Attics, garages, storage sheds, and et cetera; looking for items that can be sold to make extra money. Everyone loves making extra money. May 4th and 5th will be this year’s City-Wide garage sale.

In the month of April the Chamber of Commerce will host another “nominate your neighbor contest”. This contest will be from April until October. If you see any yard in the city limits please call my office and nominate that yard! The yard does not have to be your next-door-neighbor just someone’s yard within’ the city limits. The month’s winner will receive $40.00 in Strawberry Point Chamber Bucks’. Each entry is due the third Friday of each month. You can call me at the Chamber office 563-933-4417 to nominate, or you can e-mail me at chamber@strawberrypt.com. Each winner will also get their picture taken and the “Nominate Your Neighbor Winner” sign for the month. Who will be our first winner; nominate your neighbor today!

This year will be the first year the Chamber will host the Farmers’ Market. We have many exciting new things planned this year for our Farmers’ Market. Come see what we have going on this year. The Farmers’ Market starts at the end of May and last until this fall.

If you would like to help with any of these events or be a vendor in the Farmers’ Markets contact the Chamber office at 563-933-4417.  Or e-mail me.

Where are they now?

Ever wonder what the students of Starmont High are doing now that they have graduated? We thought it would be neat if we featured some Starmont graduates, and let you know what they are doing after graduation. Shon Cook is our first...

Greetings from the shores of Lake Michigan.  I am a 1987 graduate of Starmont High school, who has relocated to Whitehall, Michigan. I miss Iowa a great deal, with the exception of the humidity and wind chills.  My best memory of high school was the last month of school each spring, when softball geared up.  I also ran cross country, and despite being incredibly slow, I developed a family of other self-abusers.  I continue to run long distance to this day, even with a few marathons thrown in.  I attended Wartburg College after high school and I am still very active on their Board of Regents and Alumni Board – go Orange.  I attended Creighton Law School and met my husband, which led me to the great state of Michigan. I currently practice family law, coach my kids’ sports and serve on various boards and committees. I have three children.  My oldest is 14 and plays every sport she can find.  Her least favorite is softball – go figure.  My middle daughter is a soccer wonder and is on several travel teams.  My son is the youngest and he is currently into anything that he can hunt, trap or fish.  He also loves soccer.   I spend much of my time explaining to Michiganders how Iowans are different from everyone else – they are friendlier, more open, and much more caring about their neighbors.  That is what I miss most about Strawberry and Iowa – the people.
